18th or 19th Century Leadership- Ethical, Diversity, or Technological Perspectives.

This activity addresses module outcome 2. Upon completion of this activity, you will be able to:

  • MO2: Analyze military evolution from the perspective of a selected theme to construct a final paper (CO2, 5)

In module 1, you chose a research topic which was approved by your instructor.  Throughout the term, you have worked on each step of the scaffolding document  download [DOCX, file size 36.4 KB].  It is now time to put everything together and revise your previous work into a final paper.

The final paper is designed to demonstrate your skills on the course outcomes:

  1. Analyze theories of war.
  2. Describe the U.S. military strategy and evolution.
  3. Explain cultural diversity in developing a stronger U.S. military force.
  4. Evaluate cyber terrorism tactics on current and future conflicts.
  5. Research and write a paper that uses audience-appropriate content, is well organized, and correctly applies writing mechanics. (General Education Outcome 1)

Although the final paper may cover all of the outcomes, your choice of topic will determine which outcome is specific to your paper. Each outcome includes multiple competencies. See details in the syllabus. While there are several methods to demonstrate your knowledge of history,this research assignment will allow you to analyze how the United States Military has evolved from the beginning to today. Furthermore, by analyzing history and current events, you will be able to formulate an academically sound projection of the challenges the US. Military will encounter in the future.

For the research assignment, it is critical for you not to allow preconceived opinions or beliefs about military evolution and current events. You must base your analysis on academic research. Your final paper will be an 8 to 10-page paper, but you have already researched and written your paper in several steps of no more than 2 to 4 pages at one time.


Submit Scaffold Step #6: Final Research Paper (8-10 pages) 

Using the feedback from your instructor, you will significantly revise and rewrite your research project and oral presentation into a substantive research paper examining your selected topic. 

  • Start by organizing your work in the order of the research assignments listed. Research Proposal; Literature Review; Your first selected area of research (18th or 19th Century Leadership, Ethical, Diversity or Technological Perspectives); and the second selected area of your research (20th or 21st Century Leadership, Ethical, Diversity, or Technological Perspectives.
  • Your paper culminates with an identification of the challenges the military will encounter in the future and how they should confront such challenges. Your analysis and projection of future challenges must be based on a substantive body of research and your original writing. 

Here’s a basic framework for your research paper: 

  1. Abstract
  2. Introduction (250-300 words)
    • Provide overview with significance of the topic to military transformation
  3. Literature Review (2-4 pages)
    • Literature review should be focused on your two selected areas for research.
    • Conclude this section with a concise statement of the factors identified in your literature review about your selected areas.
  4. First area you selected for research (2-4 pages)
  5. Second selected area of research (2-4 pages)
  6. Analyze the transformation of your selected areas for the wars you selected.
    • In your analysis link identified lessons learned in your research
    • Identify significant challenges you believe the military will encounter in the future
    • Provide a recommendation on how the military should deal with such challenges.
  7. Conclusion (250-300 words)
