The expansion of the English language has been equated with the country's expansion in the United States. English has gradually taken over from other languages spoken by smaller groups. Native Americans are a significant group on this issue. Over time, the Native Americans have largely maintained their cultures and languages. They now appear isolated as a result. Most people, including Native Americans, are conversant in English and use it daily. Making English the official language would be considered hegemony and ethnocentrism, even though English has gained acceptance and dominance over other languages. Most non-English-speaking communities in the United States consider their language a part of their identity. They choose to learn a new language out of convenience and free will.
