How did the treaties ending WWI affect the state of Europe after the war?

This discussion addresses the following outcomes:

  • Discuss the differing motivations of the Allies at the Paris Peace Conference and propose reasonable solutions for handling the defeated powers (CO3, CO5)

As you read in this week’s readings and Module Notes, the Treaty of Versailles was not just controversial at the time of its implementation. Even today, historians debate its fairness and its effects on the state of Europe after the war.

In preparation for this discussion, read the Module Notes, Conclusion: An Armistice at Any Price (Links to an external site.), “Mistakes and Myths (Links to an external site.)", President Woodrow Wilson’s Fourteen Points (Links to an external site.)Resolutions of the General Syrian Congress (Links to an external site.), and watch Wilson's Fourteen Points (Links to an external site.)Wilson in Paris (Links to an external site.), and Big Four at Paris (Links to an external site.).

Then, in an initial post of at least 250 words discuss the following:

  • Given the disconnect between how Germans reacted to the treaty and modern historians’ assessments of its fairness, how would you evaluate the Treaty of Versailles? In what ways was it “fair” or “unfair”?
  • How did the treaties ending WWI affect the state of Europe after the war?
  • If you had been a member of the “Big Four” how would you have dealt with the defeated Central Powers?
