The Affordable Care Act (ACA) is one of the biggest changes to the healthcare system implemented in 2010. Since Medicare and Medicaid were established in 1965, this was the most significant shift in health care (IOM, p. 21). The nursing profession and its members are at the forefront of change and are essential to improving health. The Institute of Medicine explored how to transform the nursing profession to help exploit these opportunities and build a healthcare system that will meet the demand for safe, quality, patient-centered, accessible, and affordable care (IOM) (p. 21). The IOM report titled "The Future of Nursing:" will be discussed in this paper.
