The concepts of the fourth section on security management- Risks and risk management for the organization
The main mechanism for engaging the material this semester will be memos. Memos are an essential part of communicating in a professional context and they involve writing in a concise, informative style. The purpose of these assignments is to develop your ability to write memo style as well as to engage with the materials in an applied way.
Over the semester you will be writing memos that apply the materials of the course to a specific entity. You can choose any entity you want as long as it is 1) not part of the security enterprise (so not a component of DHS, the military, the IC, law enforcement, etc.) but a standard company or non-profit entity or non-security related government entity and 2) an entity that would reasonably take security into account in a broad way.
You can consider a corporation broadly (e.g. Target) or focus in on a specific location (e.g. the Target on 105 and 45 in Conroe). This memo returns to the same entity as memos 1-3.
For this fifth assignment, you will be applying the concepts of the fourth section on security management. You will want to talk about management and leadership theories and choices; the kinds of personnel, a rough budget, and your thoughts on policies that are most important; and consideration of risks and risk management for the organization. The details of your your rough budget can be in addition to the standard page counts.
Your memo will be graded not only on the content of the memo but on its writing. This memo should be between 3 and 5 pages double spaced. In the workplace memos will be single spaced, so this is the equivalent of a one and a half to two and a half page memo. The memo should have all of the components described in the Memo on Memos as well as follow style suggestions in that memo.
